British cardiologists are using stents to save children as young as seven months. Paediatric cardiologists at Great Ormond St Hospital in London say the procedures have been successful in all except one of 23 children treated for congenital narrowing of coronary or pulmonary arteries. Speaking at the British Cardiac Society meeting in Glasgow, Dr James Taylor said around 6,000 babies are born with congenital heart abnormalities every year in the UK and 300 of these also suffer narrowing of the pulmonary artery. In these cases stents will probably need to be replaced as the children grow, he said.
