Executive Summary
Ethicon (UK) has introduced its Vicryl Rapide absorbable suture to the UK market. It is made from the same substance as Ethicon's Coated Vicryl suture, Polyglactin 910, a mixture of polylactic acid and polyglycolic acid. The lifespan of both sutures varies depending on sterilisation. The Cobalt-gamma radiation treated Rapide loses all tensile support after 10-14 days. Ethylene oxide sterilised Coated Vicryl gives support for four weeks.
