Roche becomes diagnostics number one with purchase of Boehringer Mannheim

Swiss company Roche has bought Boehringer Mannheim in a deal worth around $11 billion which will make it the market leader in diagnostics removing Abbott Laboratories from the number one spot. The next largest diagnostics companies are Dade Behring, Johnson & Johnson, Becton Dickinson and Bayer. The move will make diagnostics Roche's second largest sector after pharmaceuticals, up from being the smallest of its four divisions and quadrupling its diagnostics sales.
