Researchers at the Ivanosky Institute of Virology in Russia have identified HIV-1 subtypes A, B, C, D, G, and H in a study of 130 patients. Strain A was most common among intravenous drug users, while strain B was most commonly detected in homosexual men. HIV-1 subtypes B and G are most common in Russia, according to the US Centers for Disease Control.
