Heartstream's Forerunner automatic external defibrillator has been cleared by the US FDA for use on aeroplanes. The device automatically analyses the patient's heart rhythm and determines if a shock is required. American Airlines will begin using Forerunner in April. Heartstream, based in Seattle, Washington, says that sudden cardiac arrest claims the lives of over 350,000 people in the US each year.
