The US Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) is considering using universal product numbers (UPNs) to identify medical supplies. HCFA, the agency that administers Medicare, the federal health plan for the elderly and disabled, said UPNs, usually associated with bar codes, "may be useful" in improving the Medicare payment system.
