Biomerica has obtained a US patent covering its Isletest-ICA, a blood test claimed to give several years' advance warning of type I diabetes. The diagnostic detects islet cell antibodies, which appear in the blood several years before the onset of diabetic symptoms. Newport Beach, California-based Biomerica already markets the test internationally and is planning US clinical studies leading to a premarket approval.
