Vasomedical has received FDA approval to study a non-surgical treatment for congestive heart failure that involves wrapping pressurised cuffs around a patient's legs. During the procedure, known as enhanced external counterpulsation (EECP), the cuffs are inflated during diastole and deflated during systole, apparently improving the long-term blood flow to the heart during diastole. The study, which will be carried out at the Universities of Pittsburgh and California at San Francisco, is expected to be completed within 12 months.
