The ZStatFlu point-of-care test detects H5N1 avian influenza (Hong Kong bird flu) as reliably as it detects other human-infectious influenza A and B varieties, claims its US supplier ZymeTx. The test, which measures internal activity of the influenza viral surface protein neuraminidase, rather than antibodies, was validated on H5N1 isolates at the US Centers for Disease Control, says the Oklahoma City company. ZStatFlu obtained US approval in September as a rapid tool for control of emerging flu epidemics.
