Stroke patients could benefit from a cholesterol test to check whether they might develop dementia, according to research from Columbia University in New York. Patients with the highest levels of low-density lipoprotein had an approximately three-fold increase of stroke-related dementia (but not Alzheimer's disease), the researchers reported in the July 21 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.
