Executive Summary
US researchers have identified what could be two key genetic causes of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a hormonal problem characterised by obesity, increased facial and body hair and an increased risk of diabetes. In an effort to narrow the field of 37 genes thought to play a role in causing PCOS, researchers at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia found a link to mutations in the follistatin gene. A weaker link was observed for the gene CYP11A, according to their study published in the July issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
