Tucson, Arizona-based Research Corporation Technologies has received a US patent covering its polysulfone membrane for filtering out waste products in haemodialysis. The product comprises a combination of hydrophilic and hydrophobic polymers which significantly increases membrane "wettability", avoiding the need for leachable wetting agents commonly applied to most dialyser membranes. The high permeability of the membrane also allows waste products with higher molecular weights to be easily removed. The Tucson, Arizona-based company is seeking a commercial partner to develop and test the polymers in hollow-fibre membranes.
