Executive Summary
The US Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Inspector General (IG) has issued a draft guidance to help medical equipment suppliers avoid charges of fraud, waste or abuse. To prevent problems, the IG's office said that the durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics and the supply industries must establish a culture that promotes prevention, detection and resolution of instances of non-conforming conduct. The guidance cites seven steps common to an anti-fraud programme in the healthcare sector, including internal monitoring and auditing and the use of written policies and procedures.
