France is banning mercury thermometers intended for internal body temperature measurement from March 1. The government published a decree in the December 31 Journal officiel which states that French customs may only continue to handle these products if they are being reexported to another country. The French government notified the European Commission on September 25 1998 that it intended to ban these products.
