Radionics has received clearance from the US FDA to market its ConforMAX mini-multileaf collimator. The system is designed to shape the radiation beams emitted from a linear accelerator during radiotherapy so that it conforms to the irregular shape of the tumours in the cranium, head and neck. In this way, adjacent normal tissue and critical structures will not receive unnecessary radiation and the tumour will benefit more from the full dosage. The ConforMAX is useful for small-field stereotactic radiosurgery or fractionated stereoractic radiotherapy.
