The Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) is to reconsider its decade-old resistance to the Medicare reimbursement for positron emission tomography (PET). HCFA has agreed to review a petition from the UCLA School of Medicine asking that HCFA drop its current noncoverage policy towards PET using the radiopharmaceutical fluorine 18 or fluoro-2-deoxydglucose (FDG) and cover PET scans for all forms of cancer.
