Advanced Bionics has received US FDA approval for its Clarion HiFocus Electrode for use in people who become deaf as adults. The device is the first approved technology that selectively stimulates targeted groups of hearing nerve fibres. Externally worn components process sound into digital code, which is transmitted via radio waves to the surgically implanted electronics. These deliver impulses via the electrode array which is inserted into the inner ear and delivers electrical current to hearing nerve fibers, said the Sylmar, California-based company.
