New family of oncogenes discovered:

This article was originally published in Clinica

Executive Summary

Researchers at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore, Maryland, have discovered what they believe may be a new family of oncogenes. Linda Resar and colleagues report in the August issue of Molecular and Cellular Biology that a protein expressed by the c-myc gene, which has previously been linked to the development of Burkitt's lymphoma and several other cancers, stimulates the expression of a second gene, HMG-I/Y. It is the increased expression of HMG-I/Y that appears to cause normal cells to become malignant.
