Gen-Probe to develop viral test for organ donors:

Gen-Probe is planning to modify its TMA HIV-1/HCV assay so that it can be used to screen organ donors for HIV-1 and hepatitis B and C viruses. The new test, which the San Diego, California-based company says is used to screen 70% of the US blood supply, will be designed to minimise the antibody-negative window period between infection and detection, with a result available in six hours. The US National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute is to provide $7.6 million to Gen-Probe to partly fund the test development, with Gen-Probe itself contributing $5.8 million to the project.
