Blood tests for BSE in cattle and scrapie in sheep have been developed and at least one leading scientist is confident that eventually there will be a rapid screening test for vCJD, the human version of the disease. These tests look for the prions, or abnormal proteins, which are responsible for a variety of transmissible spongiform encephalopathies.
