Executive Summary

The Brazilian government is considering a further one-year renewal of the VAT exemption currently applied to a large number of medical devices, much to the relief of local industry. The tax break, which is due to expire at the end of the year, was first implemented in 1999 in order to compensate for the impact of the global economic crisis. It was renewed for one year from January 2000.
