The Spanish government plans to sue Baxter International over the death of 11 patients who died after using the company's dialysis filters. Health Minister Celia Villalobos said the government will claim "a considerable sum of money" in a US lawsuit, claiming breach of contract. The company is believed to be seeking up to $280 million, according to Reuters. Baxter has confirmed that a fluid used in the filters may have played a role in the deaths of 51 patients worldwide (see Clinica No 983, p 1). The German federal regulatory authority is investigating the company's dialysers (see page 6).
