Executive Summary
A model test of the calculation methods needed to transpose the diagnosis related groups (DRG) reimbursement system to incorporate German data was successfully completed last week in Bonn. The results will serve as a basis for the first initial DRG calculations, which are scheduled to be introduced on January 1 2002. These will run parallel to the existing reimbursement framework. More than 400 hospitals have expressed interest in adopting these initial calculations. 27 hospitals took part in the test, which was co-ordinated by the German hospitals association (DKG), the leading groups of the statutory health insurance funds (GKV) and the association of private health insurance funds (PKV).
