The second patient to receive Abiomed's totally artificial heart, AbioCor, is not progressing as well as hoped, says the US team that implanted the device. The patient was returned to a ventilator last week due to problems that appear to be unrelated to the device. The patient had developed a high fever, but his temperature has since returned to a more acceptable range, says surgeon Laman Gray, of the University of Louisville, Kentucky. "At this point, we are treating this as an acute, reversible situation, says Dr Gray. "We don't feel that it is a problem related to the device - it has continued to work flawlessly."
