HPV (human papilloma virus) test proves its mettle in cervical cancer screening

Testing for human papilloma virus (HPV) can accurately identify precancerous changes in the cervix, researchers at the US National Cancer Institute have confirmed, in the latest trial of the technique. However, the test's cost-effectiveness in mass screening programmes will vary according to the population being tested, they warn in the Journal of the American Medical Association (January 5). Previous studies have also backed routine HPV screening on clinical grounds.
