St Jude Medical's next generation implantable defibrillator with dual-chamber pacing, the Photon, has been implanted in German patients as part of clinical trials. The company claimed the 46cm(3) device was the thinnest dual-chamber ICD yet, at 12.7mm, with a contoured shape for patient comfort. The company has submitted an investigational device exemption with the FDA to begin US trials.
