German doctors' association the Hartmannbund, has reacted furiously to comments made by Klaus Kirschner, head of the parliamentary health committee and member of the coalition government, to the tabloid press that doctors in Germany are capable of accepting bribes. The accusation was made in conjunction with the Lipobay episode, in which pharmaceutical company Bayer voluntarily recalled the cholesterol-lowering drug amid increasing reports of dangerous side-effects. Doctors may have accepted money to remain quiet about this, claimed Mr Kirschner.
