The best way to maximise patient management and throughput in terms of bed and ward utilisation is to create specialist centres for minimally invasive surgery (MIS) and to redesign the whole patient process with ambulatory care centres for MIS. This, of course, would require huge investment but would leave hospitals to focus on more acute and intensive care cases.
