Ireland has opened its first containment level III lab. It is based at the public health laboratory of Dublin's Cherry Orchard hospital. It will be used to test for the Vero cytotoxin-producing Escherichia coli (VTEC) bacteria, including the most important form associated with human diseases, E coli O157, and related diseases. Work on the recategorised VTEC requires containment level III facilities.
