US firm Medical Carbon Research Institute (MCRI) has gained the go-ahead to market its aortic mechanical heart valve in the US. The On-X device incorporates bileaflets made of graphite and tungsten, with a carbon coating. It was CE-marked for sale in Europe in 1998. MCRI of Austin, Texas says it also hopes to gain US approval for a mitral valve shortly.
