Intuitive Surgical has received US FDA 510(k) clearance to market its robotic surgical system as a tool for performing laparoscopic radical prostatectomy in men with prostate cancer. The da Vinci system, which is already available for use in general and thoracoscopic surgery, allows surgeons to remove the prostate via minimally invasive incisions, significantly reducing the pain, blood loss and recovery time associated with traditional surgery, says the Mountain View, California company.
