Slovakia now hopes to be among the first wave of countries to join the European Union in the next enlargement and to participate in elections to the European Parliament in 2004. Speaking to its national parliament in late May, Slovak president Rudolf Schuster said that nearly three-quarters of the Slovak population supported EU membership and the government hopes to join at about the same time as the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland.
