Each of England's 190 acute care hospitals is to receive an average of £500,000 ($715,000) to purchase new medical equipment, the UK government announced on the day it finally revealed the general election date. A total of £105 million is being fast-tracked to the hospitals rather than through the traditional route of health authorities. Top doctors and nurses in each hospital trust will decide how best to invest their money in equipment. Health secretary Alan Milburn said: "After decades of under investment, the NHS is now getting the investment it needs."
