Tighter controls on the use of ionising radiation are to be issued in Spain. A royal decree, currently being drafted, will stress the need to justify clinically the use of radiotherapy, in a bid to reduce unnecessary patient exposure, the health ministry has announced. Spain's radiology services are regulated under the 1984 EU radiological directive of 1984 and royal decrees that address quality standards, safety for research volunteers, radiotherapy dosing and staff training. Spain is conducting a national inventory of radiology facilities.
