Executive Summary
The Upper House of the German parliament (Bundesrat) has finally approved the introduction of the DRG (Diagnosis Related Groups) system. The decision, reached on March 30 2001, means that the new reimbursement system for inpatient and day patient care will be implemented on January 1 2003. On February 16, the Bundesrat considered setting up a federal arbitration committee to help determine a method of financing the new system if the self-governing bodies of the health service could not reach a consensus. This proposal has now been incorporated into the law proposed by the government, which the Bundesrat has just ratified.
