Decisions on the use of pre-implantation diagnostics (PID) must remain the province of the medical profession, says Professor Jorg-Dietrich Hoppe, president of Germany's federal chamber of doctors (BAK). That was the essential message of a speech delivered by Professor Hoppe in answer to a statement made earlier this year by German Chancellor Gerhard Schroder that said politicians must avoid judging on matters that should be decided only by specialists - specifically the 360,000 doctors practising in Germany.
