Executive Summary
CLOSURE Medical is developing an adhesive product for the minimally invasive treatment of emphysema. The adhesive is to be used during an endobronchial lung volume reduction (LVR) procedure to achieve bronchial occlusion, which causes the dysfunctional lung tissue to collapse, making room for the expansion of healthier lung tissue. A feasibility study of the product in 10 goats showed that it achieved LVR in all the animals. The Raleigh, North Carolina company is to conduct another animal study to optimise the procedure before entering human trials.
