Abiomed, which last week gained FDA clearance for the first implantation of a mechanical replacement heart (see page 17), has withdrawn its $444 million offer to buy Thermo Cardiosystems. Abiomed twice improved its offer, but each time the Thermo board reaffirmed its support for an earlier bid to merge made by Thoratec.
