Medtronic has completed the acquisition of Seattle-based Spinal Dynamics in a transaction valued at $269.5m (see Clinica No 1014, p 15). Spinal Dynamics' shareholders received $5.3m in cash and the remainder in Medtronic stock. Spinal Dynamics and its 50 employees will become a unit of Medtronic's Sofamor Danek spinal therapy division. The acquired business has developed an artificial disc, the Bryan cervical disc system, which provides an alternative to spinal fusion. It is already marketed in Europe and clinical evaluation has begun in the US under an FDA investigational device exemption.
