Spanish region sets up dialysis vigilance system

This article was originally published in Clinica

Executive Summary

The Spanish region of Valencia is to set up a haemodialysis and blood products vigilance system, with the aim of averting the failings that may have played a part in delaying the national and international response to the deaths in Spain of 11 haemodialysis patients in August 2001, in which the common link was Baxter's Althane dialysers (see Clinica No 983, pp 1-2). The system, approved under a regional decree passed on September 10 2002, is due to be operational within three months.
