Executive Summary
The long running debate over the value of mammography for breast cancer screening has swung again in favour of the technique, after an Italian study found that it can actually reduce the need for mastectomy. The findings go against previous suggestions that routine mammography can lead to "overdiagnosis" of the disease, thereby increasing the rates of aggressive treatments (see Clinica No 980, p 19).
