Santa Barbara, California-based Inamed has launched a national consumer awareness campaign for its BioEnterics Lap-Band adjustable gastric banding system, a reversible method of weight-loss surgery. The device is implanted laparoscopically, allowing for faster patient recovery, the company says. Some 40 million American adults are obese, with a further 97 million Americans overweight and at risk of becoming obese. The medical cost of treating obesity is estimated at some $238bn annually, the company says.
