Executive Summary
Scottish cytology laboratories will perform over 457,000 cervical smear tests in 2001-02, if the rate recorded in the first three quarters of 2001-02 continues. This will turn around the fall in testing recorded since 1997-98, when the testing rate peaked at 489,640. In the nine months to the end of December 2001, the average reporting time for laboratories was 20 days. The percentage of smears reported as unsatisfactory was 8.9% and the percentage of satisfactory negative smears was 91.5%, with 5,033 smears out of 110,737 reported as borderline.
