EU enlargement moves a step closer:

This article was originally published in Clinica

Executive Summary

All but one of the 13 European Union enlargement candidate countries have received approval to participate in the EU's 2001-05 E450m ($450m) enterprise programme. The European Commission last week extended the programme to Bulgaria, Estonia, Hungary and Lithuania. They join Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Latvia, Malta, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia. A decision on the involvement of Turkey is not expected before September 2002. The programme provides access to funding managed by the European Investment Fund and enterprise support services. It also provides greater involvement in the EU-wide business policy debate. EU enlargement offers both opportunities and challenges for the medical technology industry (see Clinica No 1003, pp 6-7).
