Executive Summary
France has moved a step further in withdrawing from the market and from export the tunnel-type "TH" zirconium ceramic femoral heads made by Saint Gobain Ceramiques Avancees Desmarquest. The healthcare products safety agency, AFSSAPS, last week issued a Decision formalising a ban on the sale, distribution, export and use of seven lots of the implants, almost a year after the first of more than 160 reports of fractures led to a multi-company recall of hip prostheses (see Clinica No 979, p 5).
