UK government welcomes Lords support for SCNT (somatic cell nuclear transfer):

This article was originally published in Clinica

Executive Summary

The UK government has provided further endorsement of the use of somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT), in its response to the House of Lords Select Committee Report on Stem Cell Research. "It is crucial that we do not restrict our research efforts to just one area. Embryonic, foetal, cord blood and adult stem cells must all be worked upon," said undersecretary for health Lord Hunt in the response, adding that "the UK has the right balance between strict control ... and sound research [for] medical advances to proceed." The Lords' report, published in February 2002, endorsed the need to use SCNT - so-called therapeutic cloning - under strict regulation by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority.
