Nexia forms BioSteel spinning deal:

This article was originally published in Clinica

Executive Summary

Nexia Biotechnologies (Quebec, Canada) is making progress with its fibre product, BioSteel, claimed to match natural spider silk in terms of strength, lightness and biodegradability (see Clinica No 992, p 18). The company has entered into an agreement with an undisclosed, international medical textile firm to develop a commercial spinning process to produce significant quantities of BioSteel-M clinical grade fibres for the development of medical devices, such as microsutures. The quantity of raw material produced by Nexia during 2002 and early 2003 is expected to supply the near-term requirements of BioSteel-M for medical device development, says the Nexia.
