The Spanish cardiology society (SEC) has welcomed the launch of the national ischaemic cardiopathy programme (PICI), citing the latest statistics on cardiovascular disease in the country. 130,000 cases of acute coronary syndrome were diagnosed in 2002, according to the SEC. Heart disease accounts for 35% of all deaths in Spain, of which ischaemia-related conditions are responsible for some 39,000 deaths a year.
