This article was originally published in Clinica

Executive Summary

The percentage of improper Medicare payments declined again in 2001, the Health and Human Services (HHS) department has announced. Last year, 6.3% of its payments did not comply with Medicare laws and regulations, compared to 6.8% in fiscal year 2000. This is less than half of the 12.8% improper payment rate in 1996, which was the first year this figure was calculated.
