Executive Summary
Healthcare issues have been brought to the fore in the EU candidate countries with declaration on September 21 of a health declaration signed by eight of the ten candidate countries, as well as Italy, Greece and Austria. The declaration, made in Prague, sets up a working committee of health ministers which will meet regularly to discuss important questions concerning healthcare. Italy, which currently holds the EU presidency, will initiate drafting a law regulating the donation and transplantation of body organs, and will propose the setting up of a network of information centres on EU health issues. Another issue that will be on the agenda of the working committee is managing the migration of patients from one country to another.
